Our Weather
What a beautiful day! Isn't the weather terrible?

Two simple statements that could be used on the same day in Lochaber. We have very interesting weather - a temperate, maritime climate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream.

If you are coming for a visit, bring a selection of clothes for different weather.

Lochaber's weather can generate a wide range of temperatures and rainfall. March 2005 produced both heavy, frequent snowfall as well as a few days where the temperature reached 20C (68F). There's a saying in the Highands - "ne'er cast a cloot until May is Oot" (keep your vest on until the end of May)

The weather shapes our landscape and produces the green verdant countryside with clear rivers and lochs draining the rain to the sea. One of Lochaber's oldest established businesses - Alcan Power and Smelting - generate electricity in their hydro power stations to smelt aluminium. If it wasn't for the rain, Fort William may never have developed to the size it is today.

Best source of weather information is the BBC's website. You can get a 5-day Fort William forecast from here. We also have a link to Yahoo's weather page for the Fort William area.
