| Spean Bridge is a growing community 9 miles north of Fort
William on the A82. The village is well known as the place where
WWII troops arrived by train to begin basic commando training in
the area. A commemorative monument 2 miles further up the road
stands in a commanding position overlooking the Nevis Range of
mountains including the Mamores and Grey Corries.
In the village a small Commando Museum offers an insight into army
life at that time. Spean Bridge is also known for the annual commemorative
service held on Armistice Sunday in September.
The surrounding countryside is beautiful - the River Spean cuts
a gorge through the rock on its way to the sea. The caledonian
canal is not so far away at Gairlochy, and the scenery on along
the A86 towards Monarch of the Glen country is also worth seeing.
Local shops and visitor information provide excellent service.
There is a good choice of places to eat and accommodation
ranges from cosy guesthouses to high quality hotels and self catering
chalets and cottages. The
local 9 hole golf club welcomes visitors as does the local Fly
Fishing
School. Spean Bridge has a fantastic primary school opened only
a few years ago.
It is possible to arrive at Spean Bridge by train from London and
other mainline stations. The downhill mountain bike track at Nevis
Range is a 20 minute journey towards Fort William.
