The ancient parish of Moidart covers all of the area north of Loch
Shiel and east of the Road to the Isles. It includes the townships
of Dorlin, Mingarry, Kinlochmoidart and Glenuig, plus Eilean Shona
in Loch Moidart.
Moidart is rich in history and spectacular scenery. Possibly the
most popular attraction is the walk to the old village of Smirisary:
turn off the main road at Glenuig and follow the side road past
the Inn right to the end of the road where there is a good car
park. Then follow the track across the valley and over the hill.
At Dorlin there is another good car park from which one can take
a walk to look at Castle Tioram, the ancient fortress of the MacDonalds.
Unfortunately it is not possible to enter the castle but one can
examine the walls and surrounding area. Take care not to be cut
off when the tide comes up!
Since the setting up of Community Councils
in the early 1980s, the area has been divided up in a rather different
way: Morvern,
Ardgour and Sunart Community Councils approximately cover their
original areas, but half of Ardnamurchan and half of Moidart are
covered by Acharacle Community Council, Acharacle and Strontian
being the largest villages in West Lochaber.
