Kinlochleven lies at the head of Loch Leven, a sea loch
which has a scenic drive around either of the roads leading to
the village. Nestled below towering mountains, Kinlochleven is
on the main West Highland Way route - a 97 miles walk from Glasgow
to Fort William.
Kinlochleven was once a tiny hamlet with a scattering of cottages.
In 1907 an aluminium smelter was built and a new village was born.
Surrounded by mountains and with an abundance of fresh water, Kinlochleven
was an ideal location for a hydro-powered factory. Aluminium production
stopped in 2000, but hydro generating continues.
New industries and tourism activities bring Kinlochleven many visitors throughout
the year. The Atlas
Brewery produces a fine range of cask conditioned beers from the
old Carbon factory and tours can be arranged. Their beers are available in
the village and in most good pubs in the area. Next door the the brewery is
a new ice climbing wall. The Ice Factor provides an interesting
experience for the casual visitor and specifically active rock or ice climbers.
The village has a variety of accommodation to offer visitors as well as several
bars and restaurants, a library and exhibition, a fitness club, a superb village
hall and a number of local stores. Lts of pleasant local walks and
an opportunity to
explore
the
hydro
dam system are all possible. On a pleasant summer evening, Kinlochleven is
a nice drive down from Fort William.
