The historical village of Glenfinnan is 17 miles
west of Fort William on the A830 at the head of Loch Shiel. Part
of the village is located around the lochside, and part located
up the hill from the loch, by the railway station.
The trains on the West Highland Line run from Fort
William to Mallaig, and a direct link from London is available
to travellers who enjoy the train in preference to road travel. Recent
Harry Potter films have elevated Glenfinnan to
a "must visit" place since the Steam Train used in the film was filmed
on viaduct at Glenfinnan.
Glenfinnan is famous as the place where Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward
Stewart) met with Clan Chief Lochiel and his Cameron clansmen. The Jacobite
Standard was raised and the second Jacobite rebellion had begun. On the loch
shore an impressive monument was later built to commemorate the famous event
and today this imposing structure provides an interesting visit and viewpoint
from its turreted top.

Loch Sheil is a long fresh-water loch which lies west of the village. Canoeing,
fishing and boat trips are possible, as are long walks in the forestry paths.
There are two hotels and a few guesthouses and B & Bs, as well as a railway
diner and restaurant/cafes. The railway station has a small museum.
Each year in August the Glenfinnan Highland Games is a major gathering and
event. The setting by the loch, with the monument and viaduct nearby make the
piping competition a special interest. The sound of the pipes can be heard
afar, and are enjoyed and remembered by many.
Glenfinnan has a beautiful Catholic church and is located half-way up
the hill towards the railway station. It enjoys good views of the loch and
sometimes is a venue for concerts and plays.
