At the foot of Ben Nevis lies Glen Nevis and by the shore
of Loch Linnhe sits the town of Fort William.
Fort William is developing into a place with a good reputation
for adventure, but will always be just a nice place to visit and
enjoy the mountains and the sea views. The town hosts several major
annual events and these include:
The Fort William Mountain Film Festival - Feb
Lochaber Marathon - April
The International Six Day Trials - May
Lochaber Yacht Club Regatta - June
The Lochaber Highland Games - July
The Ben Nevis Race - September
Downhill Mountain Bike Championships and competitions - various
dates
New Year Highland Ceilidh - December/January
In 2007 Fort William hosts the UCI Downhill
World Championships.
With a long history dating back to the days of the Jacobites,
Fort William is a good place to begin a visit to the West Highlands.
Located on the A82 between Glasgow and Inverness, Fort William
enjoys as very pleasant sitting by the shores of Loch Linnhe, a
deep tidal sea loch. Towering behind the town is Ben
Nevis, the
highest mountain in the UK and probably to most climbed mountain
in Scotland. Nearby Glen Nevis is
a beautiful Highland glen with lots of history and much to see
and do. Highland Council manage the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre where
most visitors now begin their hike up the mountain footpath to
the summit of the Ben.
Fort William's town centre is in a state of flux at the moment.
The January Storm caused serious damage to the Town Pier and the
popular Crannog seafood restaurant. Several long established shops
in the High Street have changed owners and these are soon to be
re-opened and will soon offer new shopping experiences.
Fort William's hotels, pubs and restaurants offer a range of eating
out options and we recommend you take a look at those businesses
in the A-Z Directory Eating Out Guide
