Ballachulish lies just north of Glencoe village, by the shore
of Loch Leven and surrounded by mountains. The village is famous
for its slate quarry which produced hand-made roof slates to markets
all around the world. Now closed, the village's exhibition tells
the unique story of the men who worked there.
Ballachulish has a good choice of accommodation and local services.
Walking and sight-seeing are just a few of the things to do. A
bus service
operates from the village
to Fort William and Oban.
North Ballachulish is on the north shore of Loch Leven, as you cross the Ballachulish
road bridge, which spans the narrows of Loch Leven/Loch Linnhe. This is where
the old ferry provided access to either shore, with an alternative scenic drive
around Loch Leven, via Kinlochleven.
The drive today is both peaceful and enjoyable with many picnic spots and great
views. Bishop's Bay on the north shore of Loch Leven, on the Kinlochleven road
is a natural haven for yachts.
Ballachulish now boasts a beautiful, 9 hole golf course with
absolutely spectacular mountains forming a backdrop to the fairways and greens.
