Ardnamurchan is not one specific place - it's an entire peninsula
of land, forming the most westerly area of the British Isles mainland.
It is wild and remote and beautiful. Scattered small communities
are connected by road and most of this is single track with passing
places for oncoming traffic.
Ardnamurchan covers the peninsula west of the Salen Burn and north
of Loch Sunart. It includes the townships of Kilchoan, Glenborrodale,
Acharacle, Ardtoe and Arivegaig,
plus the villages on the north coast such as Sanna and Kilmory. A major feature
is Ardnamurchan Point Lighthouse, the most westerly on mainland Britain. There
is a car ferry from Kilchoan, which takes you right to the centre of Tobermory
on the Isle of Mull.
A few miles beyond Glenborrodale you will see the Ardnamurchan Natural History
Centre, well worth a visit for its display of local wild-life, its live-video
cameras and its ‘indoor pond’ where you can see the tadpoles up close.
Another couple of miles down the road you come to a car park above the sweeping
bay of Camus nan Geall, the Bay of the Stranger. A walk down to the shore will
reward you with a view of a prehistoric standing stone with ancient Christian
stones carvings. Why not come for a self-catering holiday?
At Ardnamurchan Point, a lighthouse projects a beam of light 16 miles out to
sea, and warns vessels not to get too close. There is a visitor centre here where
you can learn about the history of the area. Nearby croft farmland and deserted,
sandy beaches make up the landscape, with wonderful views out the isles of
Eigg, Rum and Muck and Skye.
A ferry service in the summer provides a crossing from Kilchoan to Tobermory,
also known as Balamory,
on the Isle of Mull, and in doing so, allows visitors to make a very interesting
journey from Lochaber onto the Isle of Mull, and from there, the option of a
journey to Iona or back onto the mainland at Oban and into Argyll.
Day trips to Ardnamurchan are very feasible and realistic from anywhere in Lochaber,
but you may also want to consider staying in the area for a few days. You'll
find local businesses in the A-Z directory.
