Achnacarry is the seat of the Clan Cameron and family home
of Cameron of Lochiel - Clan Chief. Achnacarry Castle is a private
property and not open to the public.
The area of Achnacarry is bordered by Loch Lochy in the east and
Loch Arkaig in the north. The Dark Mile and Ka-aig Falls are two
of the local attractions in the area. The Clan Cameron Museum is
open in the summer to visitors and is well worth a visit if you
are interested in Highland history.
Achnacarry is also well known as the former WWII training grounds
for Allied Commandos who came hear from all over for basic training
prior
to going to war. The training and regime was a very hard one -
with the terrain and weather making sure only the toughest and
hardest survived. More details of the Commandos can be found in
the Commando Museum in Spean Bridge.
The fresh water lochs are great fishing places.
